While mixed methods designs can in principle combine a large variety of methods, the de facto standard in political science is currently a combination of case studies with regression analysis. To broaden this perspective, we introduce an integrated multi-dimensional mixed methods design in which several methods are used to address different dimensions of one overarching research question.
We demonstrate the usefulness of this approach in a case study on the changing legitimation of economic regimes. In this case study a combination of descriptive statistics, discourse network analysis and narrative analysis is used to answer the question whether the post-2008 financial crisis has led to a legitimation crisis of the current capitalist economic regime.
